Windsor Spitfires Prospects Report

Windsor Spitfires Logo1. Clayton Keller (C) – U.S. National Under 18 Team (USDP) – July.29.1998 – 5’10, 170 – Swansea, Illinois
48 GP – 28 G – 54 A – 82 PTS – 36 PIM

An explosive offensive threat with bring you out of your seat skill, Clayton Keller possesses elite speed and a dynamic offensive skill threat that allows him to thrive as both a playmaker and a goal scorer. With a pure goal scorers nose for the net and an elite play makers offensive creativity, Clayton Keller can be near impossible to defend. Keller possesses puck on-a-string puck handling abilities, elite vision and high end playmaking skills that allow him to make those around him better. A shifty and elusive skater with excellent edges and strong change of pace/direction abilities, Keller has the ability to cut on a dime and change direction without losing pace, which allows him to create the time and space to operate offensively. A player who boasts lightning quick release and pin point accuracy on his shot, the slightly undersized Keller is a potent point producer. While Keller’s offensive game is dynamic the future NHL first round pick does need to add strength to a slender frame and find more consistency on the defensive side of the puck.

2014 – 2nd Round – 40th Overall

2. Chase Pearson (C) – Youngstown Phantoms (USHL) – August.23.1997 – 6’2, 190 – Alpharetta, Georgia
47 GP – 9 G – 27 A – 36 PTS – 53 PIM – +18

A big bodied, two-way centre with shutdown capabilities, 6’2, 190 pound forward Chase Pearson brings a simple and cerebral 200-foot game to the table. A player who won’t wow you with quick and dynamic hands or explosive speed, Pearson’s crash and bang style of game is what makes him effective. A player who finishes his checks and works the gritty areas of the ice, Pearson shows strong puck protection skills, deceptively good hands in tight along with the uncanny ability to use his body to his advantage. Pearson is at his best in the offensive zone when working the cycle and the half-boards, however he also is an impressive net front presence, as he displays excellent hand high co-ordination, deflecting pucks past goaltenders with success. A player with excellent hockey sense and strong anticipation abilities, Pearson’s awareness in all three zones allows him to be successful even if he isn’t producing offensively. Versatile in the sense that he can play a complimentary top six role and provide offense or be a shutdown third line checking centre, Pearson does have quietly good offensive upside to his game. With deceptively good vision and a quick release, Pearson does show a nose for the net and regular contributes on the power play. While Pearson needs to continue to add strength, refine his offensive game and enhance his skating ability, Pearson plays a safe and effective game.
