“Luc Brown Named OJHL Most Valuable Player”
April 7, 2016, Wellington, Ontario – The Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) today announced that Luc Brown of the Wellington Dukes has been named the recipient of the OJHL Most Valuable Player Award.
Kicking-off the 2015-16 season with a five point outing, Luc Brown was at or near the top of the OJHL scoring chart for most of the season, putting in a dominant performance during his fourth full year in the league to capture the OJHL Top Scorer Award, as well as being named the OJHL’s Most Improved Player and a 1st Team All-Star.
Brown becomes the fifth member of the Dukes to be named OJHL Most Valuable Player, but the first since Jeremy Franklin was named the Central Division MVP in 2008-09 (also won by Chris Auger-2006, Brent Varty-2004 & Ryan Woodward-2003).
The 19-year old native of Napanee, Ontario more than doubled his offensive output this season to lead the OJHL with 42 goals and 91 points, as well as 14 power play goals, 33
power play points and 11 game-winning goals, while finishing second among all scorers with 49 assists. Brown was in on nearly half of the Dukes’ North-East Conference leading 202 goals scored this past season, while the power play specialist led the league’s second-best unit with the man advantage at 24.64% efficiency, factoring in on more than 63% of the club’s 52 power play goals.
The Dukes’ alternate captain posted a league-high eight game goal scoring streak from November 21 to January 6, firing home 14 goals, while also posting the third best scoring streak this season at 15 games, stretching from November 5 to January 10, in which he recorded 36 of his 91 points on the season. Posting points in 43 of his 51 regular season games, Brown’s season included 24 multiple point games and 10 multiple goal contests.
Twice this season, in both November and January, Brown was named the Gongshow Gear North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month. After notching two points in four games played as a member of Team OJHL Oates at the 2015 Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge that was held in Cornwall, Ontario, Brown would earn a spot on Team Canada East for the 2015 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge that was held in Cobourg and Whitby, Ontario. He would impress many of those in attendance, tying for second on the team in scoring with five points during a fourth place finish. Brown is committed to join the Union College Dutchmen beginning with the 2016-17 ECAC, NCAA Division I season.
The OJHL Most Valuable Player Award is awarded annually to the player adjudged to be the most valuable player to his club’s success throughout the course of the regular season.
Daniel Urbani of the Trenton Golden Hawks has been named runner-up in the OJHL award balloting to Brown.
Also named OJHL Top Goaltender and a 1st Team All-Star, as well as runner-up for the Goaltender-of-the-Year Award, Urbani finished the season with the fourth best goals against average in OJHL history, 1.69, in leading his club to the regular season league championship. He also led the league this season with 34 victories and 5 shutouts, while twice being named the OJHL Gongshow Gear Goaltender-of-the-Month.
The Ontario Junior Hockey League will continue the tradition of honouring its year-end award winners with the 6th Annual OJHL Awards Ceremony prior to game one or two of the 2016 OJHL Championship Series next week
