The 6’2, 190 pound Leamington, Ontario native is coming off a GOJHL regular season in which he put up league leading numbers in goals against average and save percentage, while finishing third in wins. The impressive regular season earned Wall a number of accolades including GOJHL Western Conference Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Star honors. An athletic, hybrid style goaltender, who can be quiet an imposing figure in the net, boasts an extremely intriguing skill set. Very poised for a young goaltender, Wall is sound technically and tough to beat clean. A goaltender who squares up and challenges shooters, Wall uses his size to take away large amounts of net, giving shooters nothing. Wall tracks the puck well and shows a strong battle level as he fights through screens and never gives up on a play. Wall Shows strong lateral movements along with quick lower body reflexes as his he moves his pads similar to pinball flippers, kicking out shot after shot. Wall moves extremely well in the net, remaining under control while showing immense confidence to his game. A player who has succeeded at the Minor Midget, Midget and now GOJHL level, look for Wall to push for a roster spot in the Soo next season.

2. Corson Green (D) – Northern Cyclones (EHL)/Northern Cyclones U16 (EJEPL 16U) – March.4.1999 – 6’3, 207 – Potsdam, New York

Corson Green is a physically imposing defensemen with impressive mobility and intriguing two-way attributes. Committed to the University of New Hampshire for the 2018-2019 season, Green would be a huge “Get” for the Soo Greyhounds should he forgo his college commitment. A 6’3, 207 pound left shot defender, Green moves well for a big bodied defender, showing impressive North/South skating abilities, pushing the pace in transition. A player who’s skating ability allows him to gain the offensive zone with relative ease, Green often transitions well and knows when to inject himself into the offensive attack. While still considered a “Raw” prospect in terms of long term potential, Green uses his size well, shows deceptively good puck skills and a highly competitive nature to his game. Defensively speaking Green handles the offensive attack well, closes gaps with effectiveness while also taking appropriate angles to the opposition off the rush, forcing the attack to low percentage areas. A player who will engage physically, Green uses his size well including his large wing span that enhances his stick on puck defense. Boasting and active stick and strong contain in his own zone, Green has the ability to separate player from puck with relative ease. A player who protects the puck well on zone exits and entries, Corson Green is a powerful defender with intriguing upside, who undoubtedly could help the Greyhounds next season should he end up in the OHL.

3. Ryan DaSilva (D) – Stouffville Spirit (OJHL) – March.26.1998 – 6’0, 180 – Newmarket, Ontario

A converted forward, Ryan DaSilva is in just his third season as a defensemen and is already showing immense upside as a mobile, offensive minded defensemen. Recently name and OJHL All-Star, DaSilva emerged as an elite point producing defensemen for the Stouffvile Spirit following a trade from Orangeville. DaSilva’s emergence invigorated the Spirit as they enjoyed a successful second half of the 2015-2016 season. A highly mobile, offensive defensemen, DaSilva shows fluid mobility along with quick feet and strong edges that help him thrive on both sides of the puck. DaSilva continues to improve in his own zone as he displays improved contain along with a willingness to engage physically and strong stick on puck defensive skills. A player who is doing a better job at clogging the shooting/passing lanes, DaSilva’s positional play in his own zone improved throughout the year. DaSilva displays excellent poise and patience in possession, making good decisions, while displaying impressive vision and strong puck skills. A defender who is arguably at his best in possession, DaSilva displays the ability to gain the offensive zone with relative ease, however he also shows an ability to make a clean an accurate first pass. A player who contributes offensively on a consistent bases DaSilva injects himself into the offensive attack appropriately, makes smart and calculated pinches and knows when to retreat. Boasting a powerful point shot, with the ability to get it through from the point, DaSilva also displays power play quarterbacking capabilities. Rounding into a very skilled offensive defensemen, DaSilva should be considered a strong threat to crack the Greyhounds roster in 2016-2017.

2014 – 6th Round – 117th Overall

4. Calvin Martin (C) – Stouffville Spirit (OJHL) – September.16.1999 – 5’10, 165 – Peterborough, Ontario
45 GP – 2 G – 11 A – 13 PTS – 2 PIM

Calvin Martin is a highly competitive two-way forward with a deceptive amount of offensive upside to his game. A pure skater with an explosive first step, fluid mobility and elite straight line speed, Martin can become very tough to contain both off the rush and in tight due to his elite speed, edge work and strong change of pace/direction abilities. A highly intelligent player, Martin shows an effectiveness in all three zones, displaying strong positional play along with a consistent work ethic and willingness to earn his ice. Defensively speaking Martin anticipates the play well, allowing him to pick off or tip passes while also showing an ability to clog the shooting/passing lanes with effectiveness. Strong away from the puck, Martin’s overall awareness is intriguing. Offensively speaking Martin shows deceptively good vision and playmaking skills, however arguably his best trait is his shot as it comes off a quick release and shows impressive accuracy. A player who is not deterred by the high traffic areas, Martin will drive the net with authority, works the half boards and cycle extremely well and shows a willingness to take a hit to make a play. Martin’s Hockey IQ and compete level will take him along way in the game even if his offensive upside is never reached.

2015 – 6th Round – 121st Overall

5. Ryan Horvath (C) – Stanstead College (CAHS) – June.24.1999 – 5’8, 150 – Stittsville, Ontario
38 GP – 17 G – 23 A – 40 PTS – 4 PIM – +8

Ryan Horvath is an undersized, offensive minded forward who is currently plying his trade at Stanstead College where he’s been producing at over a point per game pace. A player who displays elite skating abilities, Horvath possesses an explosive first step along with elite straight line speed and strong change of pace/direction abilities. When Horvath combines his foot speed and skating attributes with his soft hands and strong puck control he can become very shifty and elusive throughout the offensive and neutral zones. Blessed with impressive vision and strong play making skills, Horvath also possesses a nose for the net, displaying a strong shot that comes off a quick release and shows impressive accuracy. An extremely intelligent forward, Horvath has an uncanny ability to find soft spots in defensive zone coverage’s along with an impressive level of offensive creativity and strong instincts. A player who protects the puck efficiently for a smaller player, Horvath shows no hesitance to get to the high traffic areas, rather showing an ability to be successful in those areas. While Horvath is fairly strong positionally he does have a tendency to get caught flat footed and puck watch in the defensive zone.

2015 – 8th Round – 161st Overall

6. Taylor Carlson (D) – Kanata Lasers (CCHL) – August.6.1999 – 5’10, 185 – Dunrobin, Ontario
40 GP – 2 G – 3 A – 5 PTS – 31 PIM

Plying his trade with a weak Kanata Lasers (CCHL) team this season, Taylor Carlson was a standout for the team as a sixteen year old defensemen. An offensive minded defensemen that boasts strong awareness and impressive hockey sense, Carlson’s offensive abilities and mobility allow the “undersized” defensemen to impact the game in a positive way. Carlson is a poised defender who makes good decisions in possession with the uncanny ability to dictate the pace of play in possession. A player who isn’t easily rattled, Carlson handles a forecheck with effectiveness, drawing the opponent to him before making a high percentage play. A player who has the ability to gain the offensive zone off the rush due to his foot speed and mobility, Carlson also sees the ice extremely well and has the ability to make a clean and crisp outlet pass. Boasting strong overall puck skills, the puck moving defender also displays strong transition abilities, appropriately injecting himself into the offensive attack. A confident player, who displays strong positional play and intriguing hockey sense, Carlson continues to improve his play in his own zone, where added strength has helped him become more effective. Look for Carlson to challenge for a roster spot with the Greyhounds next season, although one more year of tier two Junior A would certainly help the Dunrobin native round out his game.

7. Owen Burnell (C) – Ancaster Avalanche (GOJHL) – August.24.1998 – 5’10, 176 – Caledonia, Ontario

Owen Burnell has really come into his own this season with the Ancaster Avalanches of the GOJHL, as the 5’10, 178 pound forward saw a 38 point increase in point production this season. A two-way forward who think the game extremely well, Burnell can be near lethal in the offensive zone while remaining competent in the defensive zone and away from the puck. Boasting an impressive first step and above average speed, Burnell combines his strong skating abilities with high end puck skills to become shifty and elusive in possession. An agile forward who plays with pace, Burnell also brings a strong work ethic to the table along with consistency and the versatility to play in a vast amount of scenarios. A balanced offensive treat, Burnell shows impressive vision and strong playmaking skills along with a deceptively strong shot that boasts intriguing accuracy. A player who anticipates the play well and shows strong on ice awareness, Owen Burnell combines smarts and skill to be effective on a nightly bases.

2014 – 7th Round – 133rd Overall

8. Owen Guy (C) – Kemptville 73’s (CCHL) – January.5.1998 – 5’9, 173 – Mountain Ontario

Committed to Lake Superior State University for the 2017-2018 season, Owen Guy is currently experience a breakout offensive campaign with the Kemptville 73’s of the CCHL. An undersized, offensive minded forward, Guy plays a puck possession style of play, complementing his game with impressive hockey sense and above average speed. A player who plays with impressive pace, while Guy may lack an explosive first step he does boast quick feet, impressive agility and the ability to generate above average speed. When Guy combines his speed with his strong puck skills he can become quiet shifty and elusive making it tough for the opponent to contain him. A player who boasts impressive hockey sense, Guy makes his presence felt in the offensive zone, displaying strong vision and playmaking skills along with a nose for the net. Excelling on the power play, Guy shows strong positional play in the offensive zone, along with an uncanny ability to find soft spot’s in the defensive zone coverage. Despite the intriguing offensive upside, Guy can be a perimeter player and shy’s away from contact at times. His play away from the puck, while improved still needs work as does his consistency and compete level at the defensive end of the rink. While know one expects Guy to become a shutdown centre, should he become more competent and consistent in his own zone, Guy’s game would become much more complete.

2014 – 5th Round – 97th Overall

9. Isaiah Payne (D) – London Jr. Knights Midget “AAA” (Alliance) – January.28.1999 – 6’1 150 – London, Ontario

32 GP – 5 G – 19 A – 24 PTS – 48 PIM

An under the radar, but very solid two-way defensemen, Isaiah Payne won’t wow you with end to end rushes or elite stick handling abilities, however he will provide consistent, solid and safe minutes, excelling in all three zones. A highly intelligent defensemen with deceptive offensive abilities and a quite aggressiveness to his game, Payne is a strong decision maker who keeps his game simple and plays to his strength. A defensemen who isn’t easily rattled, Payne handles the forecheck well, displaying the foot speed and agility to elude the forecheck before making a clean and accurate first pass. While Payne does transition up ice well he rarely injects himself into the offensive play, rather taking his offensive opportunities when they present themselves. Payne handles the offensive attack well, closing gaps well, while effectively taking away the middle of the ice, forcing opponents to low percentage areas of the ice. In his own zone Payne shows an active an effective stick along with strong contain and positional awareness. A player who will engage physically, Payne doesn’t look for the bone crushing hit, rather uses body contact as a defensive tool and has successes doing so, separating player from puck with effectiveness. An excellent value pick for the Greyhounds in the 11th round of last years draft, it would not shock me to see Payne challenge for a roster spot, however a full season in the GOJHL would likely do wonders for his development.

2015 – 11th Round – 221st Overall

10. Kyle Betts (C) – Powell River Kings (BCHL) – September.17.1998 – 6’0, 165 – Flesherton, Ontario
47 GP – 23 G – 20 A – 43 PTS – 32 PIM – Even

Committed to the University of Cornell, the once undersized Kyle Betts has grown to a respectable six foot tall and his game has continued to develop in the upward position. With 43 points n 47 games with the BCHL’s Powell River Kings this season, Betts was also selected to participate in the World Junior A Challenge with Canada West, where he excelled in four games, despite producing just one goal. A highly intelligent, two-way centre with elite skating ability, Kyle Betts possesses a versatile skill set along with the versatility to play anywhere in your line up. A player who plays with excellent pace, Betts possesses an elite first step, quick feet and high end straight line speed which allows him to create separation and create time and space for himself to operate offensively. Offensively speaking Betts displays elite puck handling ability, deceptively strong puck protection skills, quick hands and strong release. Boasting a nose for the net, Betts also shows deceptively good vision and playmaking skills which allow him to attack in the offensive zone as a playmaker or a goal scorer. Competent defensively, Betts uses his above average hockey sense and strong on ice awareness to anticipate the play with success, while also playing a strong positional game. With intriguing upside, it would come as no shock if the former Waterloo Siskin was selected in the late rounds of the upcoming NHL draft.

2014 – 10th Round -197th Overall

11. Nicholas Mainella (D) – Leamington Flyers (GOJHL) – March.2.1998 – 6’0, 175 – Tecumseh, Ontario
47 GP – 3 G – 14 A – 17 PTS – 74 PIM

After spending the 2014-2015 season with the Essex 73’s Junior C club, Mainella made the seamless transition to the GOJHL’s Leamington Flyers. Mainella has been quite good for the powerhouse Flyers, appearing in 47 games, while playing in all situations for the club. A truly effortless skater with impressive mobility and strong straight line speed, Mainella displays the ability to elude a forecheck with his skating abilities, while also showing an effectiveness as a puck carrying defender with the ability to gain the offensive zone with relative ease. A player who transitions up ice well, Mainella’s skating abilities allow him to take some extra risks injecting himself offensively as he displays an ability to recover in situations less mobile defenders would not be able to. An athletic defender with deceptively good strength, Mainella shows some offensive upside, as he boasts a powerful point shot, that he gets through from the point due to his ability to create shooting lanes with shifty body and stick movements. Defensively speaking, Mainella plays with aggressiveness, engaging physically while showing improved contain. Possessing an intriguing and consistent compete level, Mainella routinely engages in puck battles and often comes out with possession. While he will be in stiff competition to earn a roster spot with the Greyhounds next season, his improved two-way play will certainly enhance his odds.
